Other things

Getting a graphics card according to a minimum system requirements list won’t guarantee you’ll play the latest game at the highest graphics settings, but at least many games will run on your system. When shopping for computer hardware, consumers tend to go for the best alternatives they have. Can you blame them? They are also interested to now on the best graphics card 2014 but also on graphics card comparison.

Interested in graphics card comparison?

First doubt: ATI vs NVIDIA

ATI and Nvidia are currently the two most prominent GPU manufacturers. They are very similar but each offers a range of cards that literally overlap one another.  Nvidia made their initial steps with the modern GPU or Graphics Processing Unit – the mighty Geforce 256 back in 1999. Nevertheless, the 2 brands differ at the higher end in the graphics card market.

Nvidia are famed for their super-powered gaming level GTX graphics cards and their Quadro series- that is developed specifically for designers who are used to professional packages, such as:AutoDesk 3D Studio Max, Adobe Photoshop or Autodesk AutoCAD. Nvidia’s support for DisplayPort has been lukewarm on consumer graphics cards, but individual card manufacturers have occasionally added DisplayPort connectors. Only one year later, Nvidia came with a new idea: the new GeForce 6800 series.  It was during this period that Nvidia invented another revolutionary concept: the multi-GPU SLI technology. How long before ATI came with an answer? ATI responded with the a new and amazing platform: copycat Crossfire. Next year. There really was nothing to separate them but it’s important when you a interested to buy the best graphics card 2014.

ATI alternatively are famed for offering good power at a reasonable expense, perfect for the ordinary person who doesn’t have a lot of money to spent as a dedicated business purchasing their cards. On the AMD side, the Radeon HD 6000 line of graphics chips continues to support a minimum of three displays with a single card, just as the older HD 5000 series did. However, all HD 6000 cards have DisplayPort 1.2 built in. What that means is that monitors with DisplayPort 1.2 support can be daisy-chained. In consequence, one card can drive up to six LCD panels. Don’t believe that ATI doesn’t create high-end cards, their items are very effective and it is just that Nvidia push a tiny tiny bit much more out of theirs.

Memory size

graphs2You should know the following:  “memory is never enough, always upgrade to the maximum”. That might be true for computer memory, but when it comes to graphics card memory, I tend to disagree. From our tests a 512MB graphics card is more than sufficient to handle most of the graphics intensive application. Conveniently, derivatives of the GeForce 8800 GT are available with 256MB, 512MB, or 1GB of memory, making it easy for us to probe the impact of graphics memory size on performance. We’ve tested a collection of single cards and SLI configurations in a selection of new games, across multiple resolutions, to see where memory size matters, if it does at all.

It matters!

For example: GeForce 8800 GT cards with 512MB of memory have no problems squeezing the RAM chips on one side of the card. However, to accommodate 1GB of memory, the Super+ fills out both sides. The memory chips which are on the underside of the card tend to move behind a bright blue heatspreader, but they’ve agreed to come out just this once for a picture.

In many cases a 256MB GDDR3 graphics card + a good GPU can offer a significantly better performance that a graphics card 512 MB, DRR2. Now if you are a serious gamer, it is imperative to have a nice and dedicated graphics card. Why a dedicated graphics card? Because they have their own RAM, or VRAM. Remember that powerful games surpass a simple integrated GPU.

The games which were launched in the last 2-3 years can require a video card with at least 512 MB of dedicated memory just to make an idea.  Sometimes you simply want every video settings at the maximum so, in this case, you’ll have to be ready to spend more for a powerful graphics card. The amount of memory they carry will determine how well applications which rely on the video card work.

Our advice is to get a 512MB graphics card. It should be able to last you for a few years.

Do you need dual graphics card?

Crossfire technology ( SLI), which is present in most of the best graphics card 2014, helps you to connect multiple video cards together. It was considered a very powerful innovation that greatly improves a system’s graphics handling capabilities. Two video cards sitting closely together in your case will produce more noise, draw more power & produce more heat. By putting tigether  of two or more GPUs , the performance of that system had increased 2-3 times.

If you’re concerned about the things I mentioned, SLI and Crossfire may not be for you

In the current market, there are not many applications and games which need this speedy processing. Yet, since the speed the images technology is improving, it is merely an issue of time that SLI or Crossfire technology will become a leader in the industry.

For gamers who want to achieve a faster and better graphics performance, you might want to consider acquiring a SLI or Crossfire ready graphics card. SLI & Crossfire can sometimes cause a phenomenon -“micro stuttering”- that makes the video look a tad choppy. It can be particularly aggravating to some people, especially at lower framerates. You won’t be able to find such issues at the products we featured as the best graphics card 2014.
